History of Polo Shirts

Although polo shirts have always been associated with sports, in truth, today’s polos evolved from the tennis shirt.

In the early 1900’s long sleeve tennis shirts were cumbersome and uncomfortable so a new pullover T-shirt design was developed that featured short sleeves, a soft collar, a button placket and loosely knit breathable cotton.

It was a winning design, which was soon adopted for use by polo players internationally. The shirt’s popularity grew and by mid-1900 this design was more commonly known as a polo shirt, even by US tennis players.

Inevitably, golfers also took to this unique design and polo shirts were universally adopted as standard golf attire. The golf industry and golfers alike soon embraced the term “golf shirt” and since golf is played by both men and women, it wasn’t long before clothiers began making polo shirts for women.

Today polo shirts are a standard category of clothing worn across many sport disciplines and as standard informal business attire. Its use can also be found in retail, in schools and for non-athletic use where t-shirts are not acceptable attire.
